We have dance classes at In Step Studio, Tallahassee, Florida.
I have classes in my studio, 4 miles south of capitol circle on Crawfordville Highway. My studio has mirrors along one wall and the floor is a true floating floor with mulitple foam layers under 2 layer of plywood and capped with a nearly indestructible dance floor covering. Great sound system and lots of sunlight! Never a problem with parking. My studio carries dance costuming, dance music, drums and various dance props.
The location of In Step Studio is at 2609 Glover Road, Tallahassee. Glover Road runs east & west between Crawfordville Highway (US 319) and Wakulla Springs Road (Florida 61) The map quest web site, Map quest does a good job of mapping the location. Call 850-421-5151 for more information or send email to Nancy Redig, and please add the studio name to the subject line. This will separate your inquiry from the tons of SPAM sent to the studio.
Because this name more closely defines what I teach and perform. The hardest thing for me to
tolerate is the silly grin from clue-less strangers once they find out what I teach. Most of those giggling about the name
have no idea how
offensive they are being about a culture. And then comes the explanation: I teach dances that the
folks do in the country, in the city, in their living room and they do it FOR FUN! I teach all
kinds of movements, including the steps that do not require torso movement. Everyone dances;
shoulder shimmies are to keep time with the music. Hip movements are just that - hip
movements. And, I dance with heart, body and soul.
I have so much to learn. I intend to be learning as long as I am living. There are so many
movements to master. Since I grew up in European culture, I have so much to learn about the
culture that gives us this dance. I insist on passing along what I learn to my students. They
come to my classes for a dance form and they come away with a better understanding of a part of
the world. So, I feel I have to refer to the part of the world that shares this dance form with us. I avoid the
term that too many associate with little clothing and sexual conduct.
Let's dance!
My Middle Eastern Dance stage name, Halimeda, was selected by my husband from a list of
Greek names: thinking of the sea. Since we were living on our sail boat, racing our 'home' on
weekends, SCUBA diving, the name seemed just fine. My marine biologist, husband neglected
to mention that it is also the name of a beautiful, marine algae.
